Name Plates  - Things to Consider

What is your reason for buying a name plate?

  • Will this be a replacement for a current name plate - established format
  • Establishing new office signage - overall business decor should be considered
    • Interior or exterior location
    • Will it need to be affixed permanently
    • What material will it be affixed to: wall, wood door, partition, glass

Is it important to identify the room by name or number

  • e.g. "Conference Room" or room number 512
  • Are there ADA compliance requirements
  • Are position titles important to note on the name plate
    • Will you need one, two or three lines of text

Is company or organization branding important

  • Will you display company logos - will the logos be full color
  • Will  the name plate change often
    • Personnel changes or position changes

What is your desired color and font

  • Popular colors: brushed silver/black, brushed gold/black; blue/white
  • Popular fonts: Arial; Helvetica; Times New Roman

Size Requirements

  • Most popular sizes for text only: 2" x 8"; 2" x10"; 3" x 10"
  • Most popular size with logos: 2'"x10"; 3" x10"
  • Most popular size for two part name plates: 2"x3"- room number; 2"x8" for name

Mistakes Customers Make Buying Office Name Plates

Selecting the wrong Name Plate Size

  • 2" x 8" Name Plate with a lot of text can result in small font size reducing desired impact
  • 2" x 10" or greater Name Plate with minimal text creates too much open space reducing desired impact

Selecting the wrong Material

  • Material selection should take into account office decor (e.g colors that compliment office theme)
  • Material should take into account heavy traffic areas with consideration for  long term wear

Selecting the wrong Font and Font Size

  • Font can reinforce company culture: e.g. Casual - Italicized; Traditional - Times New Roman; Professional - Helvetica
  • The amount of text and lines of text can drive font size; On a 2" x 8" Name Plate font size of 55 -75 is desirable
  • On two lines of text you can make the font size for the name larger than the title for more impact

Not displaying Company Logo or Room Number

  • Not displaying the company logo misses an opportunity to reinforce the company brand
  • Not providing a room number makes it more difficult to find the desired location

Providing Poor Quality image for Logo

  • A low resolution logo will result in the logo on the name plate not having the desired detail
  • A logo should have at least 300k resolution ideally in a jpg, tif or pdf format

Not Reviewing Accuracy of Proof

  • This is one of the most common mistakes
  • Proofs are provided as a quality check to make certain that what will be produced is what the customer wants.  It is important for the customer to review proofs for any errors before name plates are produced

What are the Material and Mounting Options

Before deciding on name plate material and mounting options you need to determine where your name plates will be located. Will they be installed outside exposed to the elements or inside and if inside will they be in low traffic or high traffic areas?

For exposure to weather or high traffic areas best options are metal or textured acrylic

  • For name plates installed permanently and exposed to the elements year round the premium choice is stainless steel.  These name plates withstand the harshest of weather and maintain their high end look.
  • If you want long-term durability but at a lesser cost, aluminum name plates is the way to go
  • If you need color options other than silver rand black textured acrylic offers durability and color combinations

When weather or high traffic is not a concern, two color acrylic is the material of choice

  • Two color acrylic office name plates offer considerable versatility and lend themselves to detailed engraving ideal for logos
  • Acrylic is also very cost effective and is a good choice when there are frequent name plate changes; this is also a good choice when part of the name plate is fixed (e.g. room number) while the name can be changed
  • If you need a multi-color logo and two color acrylic does not work, sublimated aluminum is the way to go. This option provides the upscale look and feel of metal with the dramatic color of sublimation printing

For mounting as with material, location will play a key part in your decision

  • For exterior application usually mounting to brick, concrete or metal the best choice is screws,
  • For a distinct look screws with stand-offs do the trick with the depth of the stand-off ranging from .5 inch to 1.5 inches
  • For interior applications, name plate holders are used and the holder is secured with the name plate sliding into the holder. In this case, double sided adhesive is the most popular option for all surfaces except glass and fabric. For glass a clear doubled sided tape is suggested or a back plate installed to conceal the adhesive.  For fabric, which is typical with cubicles, partition pins are most often used.

Holder Options and Popular Sizes

While name plate holders are not essential they are frequently used to secure a name plate to a wall, door or cubicle , etc.

When holders are not used :

  • The name plate is usually intended to be permanently secured, exposed to the elements or in high traffic areas.
  • The name plate is usually thicker, at least 1/8 inch thick with the material varying from textured acrylic to aluminum, stainless steel, brass or in some cases even bronze
  • A popular method for securing name plates without a holder is a silicone based adhesive or stainless steel screws, which is most effective for name plates exposed to the elements.
  • Stainless steel or aluminum "stand-offs" can be used in high traffic area such as hallways, as way-finding signage or heavy use areas like restrooms or conference rooms. The stand offs provide a unique look by creating a space between the name plate and the wall, etc.

When holders are used:

  • Holders allow for considerable flexibility with your name plates.
  • Typically made of either aluminum or plastic (as frames with rounded or square corners), you can easily change a name plate when using a holder
  • Both the aluminum holders and the plastic frames come in various color choice.  The aluminum is available in brushed silver, brushed rose gold or black; where as plastic frames come in black, white, gray and dark brown
  • With a holder, name plates slide in and out of the holder whereas with a plastic frame the name plate snaps into the frame.
  • Holders also allow for part of the name plate to be fixed (e.g. a room number) while the remainder of the name plate can be easily changed as needed (e.g. an employee name)

Popular Holder Sizes

  • Holders come in various sizes but two sizes (2" x 8" and 2" x 10" ) are clearly the most popular.
  • These two sizes lend themselves to multiple lines of text, the potential for a logo or room number and option of engraving or printing the name plate. They also provide good value and optimal use of engraving space for the average name plate
  • Another option is the 3" x 10 two slot holder which offers two different slot sizes in the same holder (e.g 2" x 8" on the top and 1" x 8" on the bottom).
  • While not as popular holders are also available in 2" x 12", 4 " x 10" and 4" x12"

Custom Office Door Name Plates

  • For names that change frequently we offer office door name plates with frames that have a clear removable lens.
  • The name plate frames are ideal for those that want to use a paper insert printed in-house.  These frames are available in brushed silver or black and come with a curved or flat surface.
  • These are popular with churches, medical and professional offices and are easily mounted
  • If you would like to add a room number to your name plate, we offer 2-part name plates with the option of fixed or changeable numbers.

Door Name Plates and Magnetic Name Plates

  • If name plates need to be affixed to metal doors and need to be changed easily, magnetic name plates offer a good option.
  • Framed magnetic name plates have magnets inside a plastic frame and the name plate is secured within the frame by the magnet.
  • Another popular option is adding a magnet to the back of a standard name plate holder and securing the holder to ta he metal door or locker.  With this method  the plate is easily changed by removing the plate from the holder. and replacing it with a new engraved name plate. Both methods work equally well.

Cubicle Name Plates

If you need signage for cubicles, cubicle name plates are a great choice.

  • They provide the same flexibility as office name plates
  • They are easily changed and can be customized to fit your needs
  • They can be adapted to glass, metal or fabric, with the addition of Velcro, partition pins or cubicle name plate holders.
  • For open office layouts  multi slot name plate holders can be used when cubicles are set up for several people.
  • Custom multi-slot holders are also available to accommodate different size name plates for cubicles. This configuration can also be be used on doors or walls as a mini directory or way-finding sign .
